Growing up, whenever a black movie would come out in theaters, my father would always buy the soundtrack, whether it was on CD or tape. I never understood the relevance of the soundtrack growing up. But now as an adult, I understand how the songs related to the plot and told the story in some way through music.
The same goes for books.
I absolutely love when authors release a playlist of either songs mentioned in the book, or songs that helped to inspire what the story is about. When you listen to the music, you can really feel how the character felt as well as embody the emotions the author was trying to get across.
For example: If a book playlist has Next Lifetime by Erykah Badu (linked below for your listening pleasure), you know that someone is feeling confused about their love life. You know that someone may be interested in another character but can’t act on that interest because of the circumstances. You feel for the character the same way you felt for Erykah when you first heard the song (and if you haven’t, do it!)
Sometimes I’m even inspired to listen to a song just because it’s mentioned on an author’s playlist. It may be from a totally different genre than what I’m use to, but that doesn’t mean I won’t feel the message, feel the emotions, feel the…rawness.
So what about you?
Do you listen to book playlists?
Do you connect with songs mentioned as an aid for inspiration for the author?
If an author drops a song as a part of a teaser for a book, does it peak your interest for the book?
