Late October and all of November was a very busy month for me. I’ve been digging my way out from under so many books, and as a result; I fell behind in reviews.. But, I’m BAAAAAAACK!
I discovered Cheris Hodges several years back, and I’ve followed her progress over the years. Her writing has grown, as has her writing style. A mystery and romance combination is absolutely my cup of tea. In this story, there was a mysterious element and a romantic side. That combo is a guaranteed read for me.
Carver Banks and Zoe Harrington had a history of sorts. An adversarial or love-hate relationship might be the best description for what they had going. Zoe was a former FBI agent who’d chosen to retire after a very difficult case, and in its aftermath, she felt her credibility with the agency was loss, to no fault of her own. Zoe chose to open her own protection agency in the wake of her decision to leave the FBI with her head held high. Meanwhile, a sinister villain had set his sights on Zoey and was determined to silence her investigation into the bevy of criminal acts no one appeared to care about. Zoe was the ace hacker for the agency, and as a result, she chose to use her best asset to establish her business model. Okay, let me clarify, her best asset was her hacking skills. So, get your minds out of the gutter. Tsk,tsk.
A very big fish was pulling the strings behind a unique and volatile investigation which involved agent Carver Banks and his desire to keep Zoe safe from a threat she was unaware of existed. Carver talked Zoe into taking a case as a rouse to stay with her and keep her safe from the aforementioned threat. And remember, she was unaware the extent of danger looming because of a calculatedly ruthless man (name withheld to protect the story).
During this fake investigation, Zoe, and Carver expounded upon their relationship, which blossomed into love and all its trimmings. But in his periphery, the ground was slowly shifting, and the threat of Carver’s little white lies coming home to roost neared with each day. Carver was aware of Zoe’s penchant for hating liars, and his lie was a very big one. Even if his lie was for a worthy cause, Zoe Harrington. Zoe was unforgiving and unrelenting in that regard. A few characters from previous books resurfaced to add charm and zest to the story. Chante and Zach made an appearance along with their baby on board, and others surrounding the investigation from the previous book.
About the story; this story was well-developed and the characters nicely clear. The premise was well-executed, and theme carried out to full completion. The love scene’s were minimal, yet nicely done. The story had the realness I like in a romantic suspense story. My review 4.8 stars.
