I first discovered this author in 2013 or 2014, when I read Crime of Passion (06), Ulterior Motives (08), and then I read Unexpected, and Its Only Love, I later discovered the Mike Black Saga. I’ve been trying to catch up since I am many books behind in the series. Furthermore, it’s always a happy moment to see a new release by this author. I said all that to say, Mr. Glenn has a full collection of stories to read about. His love stories are just as compelling as his dramatic ones. This story was a love story, a story of infidelity, and the consequences of forbidden love.
Brooke Patterson and Chris Gable worked for the same media conglomerate. Both were equally attractive people, and both were married to other people. So, let me say this up front. I don’t usually enjoy reading books that center around infidelity. The backdrop of cheating usually makes my stomach boil. This story for some reason did not give me that rumbling in my soul or the pit of fire in my eyes from being so angry with the cheaters.
Maybe, it’s the way the story was told, or maybe it was the way the couple began their friendship-to- lovers-to-passionately-in-love with one another relationship. Maybe that’s what changed my feeling about their ultimate betrayal. And then again, there was something about the chemistry and the connection; it was barely palpable to read about their evolution as a couple. The pages burned with passion page after page, and the sensual way they connected was hot and steamy. Unlike in some romance stories, where the story deals mostly with the sex; their story focused on the progression of their friendship. The communication, the like-minded ways in which they approached business and the ways they unwound with coworkers. Two like-minded people who worked for the same firm, sharing similar interest, and having a zest for life. Those were some of the reasons I could see past the inevitable consequences for the time they shared in mystery. Their acts of betrayal were bound to come to an end. What’s done in the dark always comes to light.
On another note, the spouses never seemed to pay attention to the signals and clear red flags waving in front of their faces. Jason seemed too aloof, and Corrine was always too busy. There is no way exercising and hanging with friends will ever replace a hot husband, that is, If you are in love with him. Later in the story, we’ll discover what that was about. Yes, it all came crashing down, and what was revealed was no surprise to me. Jason and Corrine were complicit as well in different ways. I forgave both for their infidelity; I even respected the choices each made in the end. The story had a few editing concerns but nothing to shout about. Overall, I liked the story, the characters, the storytelling and the overall concept. My rating 5-Stars.
I love this site, I have been looking for reviews on African American books. Most importantly a reveiw that would inspire me to read the book without giving to much away. I have recently started puting together ideas to do just this thank you. I enjoyed the site not just the reveiw.
So glad to hear you’re enjoying the site! <3
